Trials for Hurst 3 Won’t Happen Before October
Three men from Hurst and Creal Springs face murder charges in the 78 year old Maxine McKenzie fatal shooting. Hernandez and Duval are also accused of sexually assaulting the victim. Motions to suppress incriminating statements have not been heard, and the trials were separated to allow use of those statements. The earliest trial date is about 60 days after a hearing.

Herrin native Lynette Cook tapped by NASA for exoplanet art
Herrin native Lynette Cook, a renowned astronomy illustrator and 1978 Herrin High School graduate, was commissioned by NASA to depict art for a newly discovered Jupiter-like exoplanet orbiting the star 55 Cancri. The unnamed gas giant, about 41 light years away, weighs 3 to 5 times Jupiter and completes an orbit similar to Jupiter’s. Cook, based in Daly City, produced color sketches and final acrylics after researching the planet, saying the project marks a historic, far-reaching scientific moment.
