Gas tax hike favored by Southern Illinois board
The Southern Illinois Inc. board votes for a proposed 1.5 cent per gallon gas tax increase to shore up Illinois road funds. Bills Would Give More Aid to Area School Districts
Southern Illinois districts stand to gain from $1.4 billion in general state aid for fiscal 1980. Edwardsville would get $3.6 million, Staunton $617,000, Triad $1.8 million, Highland $1.2 million, Worden $273,000, with others like Carbondale districts, Murphysboro, Herrin, Marion, Du Quoin, Benton, West Frankfort, Chester, Carterville, and Anna Jonesboro also receiving increases. The Senate cleared the bills after Sen. Arthur Berman withdrew amendments for Chicago funding. governor’s approval and possible adjustments remain under consideration.
