The Commerce Department reports a 0.2 percent drop in the leading index for May, the first fall in four months. Six of ten components were down, led by a drop in money supply, with higher layoff rates and weaker sales, cash changes, and stock prices also contributing.
The Supreme Court ruled seven to two that states may not impose the death penalty for rape. The decision voided Ehrlich Anthony Coker’s death sentence for a 1974 rape in Waycross, Georgia, and cited the punishment as disproportionate. Justices White, Stewart, Blackmun, and Stevens joined. Brennan and Marshall concurred separately. Burger and Rehnquist dissented. The ruling also sent back two related Georgia cases for new sentences, likely life imprisonment.

Ed Brewald, weather observer at the Southern Illinois Airport near Carbondale, reports a high pressure system moving in from a cold front. The front ended seven days of heavy rain, with an additional .41 inch recorded at the airport before departure. Pomona reports over two inches in an afternoon thundershower. Daytime highs mid to upper 80s, overnight lows near 60, with skies remaining clear to partly cloudy through Thursday.
The Illinois Senate approves a school aid budget of 1.841 billion dollars, over 53 million more than Gov. Thompson asked. Of the total, 1.331 billion would flow to local districts under the state aid formula.
The Illinois Senate approved a $250 000 appropriation to plan a law school building at Southern Illinois University Carbondale and about $11 000 for a weather station at SIU airport. It also approved $150 000 for the Jackson Union Counties Port District, with additional funding for a roof repair at John A. Logan Community College. The votes were 31 22.
