Illinois Eyes Two Capital Punishment Bills On Desk

Gov. Daniel Walker may face two capital punishment bills after the Illinois General Assembly adjourns. The Senate approved a broad bill making death mandatory for 11 murder categories, while the House sent a more limited measure. Walker has not indicated a signing or veto, promising to study constitutional questions. The broader bill would use a three judge panel to decide eligibility for the death penalty, including crimes against officials, officers, hijackings, robberies, rapes, arson, and contract killings. The second bill would mandate death for murders of peace officers, firemen, or a second murder. Some senators argued the plan violates peers' rights. others tout it as protecting lives and reflecting voter will.

Senate backs 14 foot mobile homes on Illinois highways

The Senate approved a bill 30 to 13 to raise the mobile home width limit from 12 to 14 feet on Illinois highways. Supporters say it will help Old Orchard Homes at Anna expand production and employment, with 50 new jobs and a $285,000 payroll increase. The measure requires escort vehicles and allows DOT to restrict transport in severe weather.
