Residents hold a weekly vigil in Carbondale since 2002 to oppose the war in Iraq while supporters argue for the mission. Sgt. Christopher Miller of Carbondale says the United States can only do so much in Iraq and that rebuilding will take time. He notes Iraqis may not be ready to govern yet, expects to finish his tour by mid July, and sees insurgents mainly from neighboring countries. Miller cites 100 insurgents captured and 22 roadside bombs found by his unit, with more than 1,000 rounds seized.
In Istanbul NATO pledged a bigger military role in Iraq amid rising violence before Baghdad's political turnover. President Bushsaid the alliance would train and equip Iraq’s security forces to curb lawlessness and terrorism as leaders meet under tight security with F-16s overhead and 23,000 police patrolling.
William and Donna Ayers traveled from Harrisburg to Carbondale to see Fahrenheit 9/11 as conservative groups urged theaters to scrutinize campaign finance ads. SIUC student Eric Gullett saw the film twice, calling it intense and revealing. The film won top honors at Cannes last month.
