A three day stream of verdicts begins for 674 defendants charged in the Berkeley campus sit in at Sproul Hall during December protests. Most face trespass and failure to disperse with some also charged with resisting arrest as the Free Speech Movement spurs campus unrest.
Three inmates armed with improvised pistols and a bomb seized two guards and occupied the second floor of the Western State Penitentiary hospital. Guards quelled the uprising with tear gas. hostages were released unharmed. The blast injured Richard Mayberry, 27, the only hurt.
A head on collision on State Highway 79 near St. Peters, Missouri, killed nine people, seven from one family the Percivals. Survivors include two Percival children with minor injuries and two Burgman occupants also dead. Causes cited: Percival auto tire blowout led to swerve into Burgman vehicle.
