Transfer station planned to replace Williamson County dump
Williamson County will see the Carterville landfill closed later this year replaced by a major refuse transfer facility to ship all county garbage to Everett Allen's De Soto landfill. Allen estimates 350000 to 500000 dollars needed for tractors and trailers plus a potential recycling operation and offices. He aims to have the transfer site ready as Carterville closes and cites projected savings from fewer trips to De Soto while noting higher transport costs during the transition.

Workshop jobless won't be idle long
About 70 or more mentally, physically and emotionally handi capped and senior citizens left jobless after the Jackson Community Workshop in Murphysboro was gutted Thursday morning. Kroger Co. of St Louis offered to lease its vacant store at 1818 Walnut St for 60 days, covering only utility costs and insurance, to keep the workshop operating with minimal disruption. The workshop plans to borrow equipment from other area workshops and schools and may move into the Kroger building next week. Clients anxiously await updates while counselors reassure them that operations will resume, with activities like fishing trips and future Six Flags visits once arrangements are finalized.

Consol appeals NLRB ruling on warehouse workers split
Consolidation Coal Co says it filed an appeal of a National Labor Relations Board ruling that favors United Mine Workers representation of Consol warehouse workers. The Seventh Circuit in Chicago has not docketed a filing yet. Consol claims inclusion violates the 1978 national coal contract. Workers at mines near Sparta, Cutler and De Soto voted to join the UMW but Consol has refused to negotiate. All three mines have been closed since June 9 due to an unfair labor practices strike by the warehouse workers.
