Soybean cell research could create a super plant
The American Soybean Association funds a three year project at the University of Illinois to grow whole plants from soybean cell cultures. Dr. Keith Smith of the ABA says the $45,000 grant will boost yield and reduce costs. Dr. Jack Widholm notes potential drought and herbicide tolerance and higher nutrition.

Soybean Cell Cultures May Boost Nutrients and Resistance
Farm Life reports Widholm explains cultivated soybean cell cultures could raise amino acids like methionine for animal feed and proline for drought resistance. A chemical herbicide resistant variety could allow weed elimination without harming soybeans. Smith notes the 20,000 member association has granted about $1 million in soybean research in five years.
Too much or too little in farming across seasons
Mike Carr notes farmers face endless "too" moments from rain to heat and cool to germination. He cites Mary Roesner of the Moline Daily Dispatch and notes Henry and Pike counties produce many hogs, with woodraised hogs common in Henry County as spring approaches.

Hooked on Hampshire hogs boosts export trade from Towanda
Thurman Bliss, a Hampshire hog producer in Towanda, has built an export network reaching Austria Italy Japan Malaysia Africa Mexico and Hungary. He markets purebred weanlings to buyers who pay near market price under strict health standards, shipping costs favoring lighter stock. Bliss, a 4-H alumnus and Illinois Wesleyan graduate, runs 1000 pigs annually on 1000 acres with his father James handling farrowing while he handles marketing.

Soybean Reserve Falls Short Of Forecast For 1978 Harvest
The Agriculture Department says the upcoming 1978 soybean reserve will be about 215 million bushels by September 1, well below the earlier forecast of 255 million. The smaller reserve comes despite higher domestic use for crushing, larger oil and meat production, and stronger export demand, with reserves still more than double last year’s 103 million. The report notes weather and farming practices influence yields and future supply while farmers face temperature-related fertility issues in hog production and ongoing breeding challenges amid modern crop improvements.
