Carter vows to curb inflation and curb red tape in Texas
President Carter, in a Beaumont stop amid heat and a post office dedication, pledged to curb inflation and reduce red tape, signaling willingness to veto spending to hold the line. He cited opposition to funds for veterans, farmers, water projects, defense and education, and named groups including highway and defense contractors, home builders, dam builders, educators and local officials. Carter concluded with a Texas fundraising stop and a Fort Hood firepower demonstration before returning to Washington.

Fishermen pursue white shark after 14 hour battle off Montauk
Dozens of Long Island fishermen hunted a great white that escaped after a 14 hour duel. On the Ebb Tide a 40 foot boat, John Sweetman and a six man crew harpooned a 25 to 30 foot, two ton shark that dragged the vessel at times. After 12 hours of effort on Saturday they returned sharkless. A Saybrook angler reported harpooning a large shark 40 miles south of Montauk Point with a buoy attached, but the fish pulled a keg 150 feet below before vanishing. It is unclear if this was the same shark Sweetman battled Friday.

Welfare fraud costs IL taxpayers billions in 1977 study
A Lindsay-Schaub survey shows Illinois lost funds to criminal fraud and noncriminal waste in welfare programs. Medicaid and AFDC dominate costs with hundreds of millions spent on investigations, audits, and studies. Multiple agencies run overlapping efforts, raising questions about efficiency and controls.

Welfare Fraud The Great Chase
An editor's note introduces a two month Illinois public aid fraud inquiry by Carol Alexander. It outlines audits, costs, and findings across state and federal agencies, highlighting large expenditures, limited prosecutions, and uncertain savings amid ongoing fraud losses. The piece cites figures from the Fraud Prevention Commission and others, with a warning that fraud costs may rise even as reforms proceed.

Disputes Over State Welfare Fraud Estimates
Sen. Donald Moore and IDPA figures clash over how much welfare loss stems from fraud, abuse, and errors. Bakalis cites 300 million as fraud losses while IDPA director Quern argues most improper spending arises from mistakes and recipient confusion, with little proven fraud.
