Illinois Legislature Near End Of Session Debates Mass Transit Proposals

The Illinois General Assembly enters its final week of the spring session with a Republican backed half percent sales tax cut and multiple mass transit measures advancing in the House. Chicago backed plans add a five percent gas tax for a regional authority serving six counties. House Speaker Blair says operating costs would total about 160 million dollars yearly, potentially replacing state subsidies. Gov Walker opposes the tax cut, proposing a $400 per person income tax exemption instead. Other issues include abortion regulation no fault insurance and a revived death penalty for certain murders.
