Chester High Awards Day honors many students and staff
The Chester High School gym hosted Awards Day naming Debbie Best Jana Frazer Richard Hartenberger Mona Myatt and Marsha Rust as high honor scholars. Numerous students received academic letters awards in sports and science with Mona Myatt collecting several merit prizes and multiple named honors awarded to Hartenberger Frazer and others.

Stardusters teen band showcases teen virtuoso Danny Jones
Danny Jones of Cutler shines as a multi instrument teen in the Stardusters. taught saxophone by Trico High School director, plans to study electrical engineering at Rolla School of Mines. He balances band practice with Willisville and Cutler members Rex Wendell Carla Stoffel and Charlie Lindner. The group gigs thrice weekly in the area and will appear on a Harrisburg TV show.

Several area youths from Franklin Jackson and nearby counties travel to Urbana to compete in state judging contests at the University of Illinois. Five Jackson County members join Robert Frank for the district livestock judging contest at Southern Illinois University May 18. Lincoln teens start Bi weekly summer dance series in Carbondale
The first summer teen dance in Carbondale runs 8 to 10:30 p.m. at Lincoln Recreation Park behind Lincoln Junior High School. The program is a joint effort of Carbondale Park District Southern Illinois University Recreation and Outdoor Education and the Carbondale Teen Center Board. Sam Wright says dances will be Tuesdays and Fridays all summer with free admission unless bands require fees. about 1500 dollars is sought to cover bands. The Hixon band plays tonight and The Saturday Evening Stick is set for Friday with Go Go dancers planned for each event.

Alexander cadet wins Schroder Cup and Dorothy Joyce Medal
Capt John C Alexander of D Company at St Johns Military Academy Delafield Wis earned the Schroder Cup for highest scholastic average and the Dorothy Joyce Medal for promoting honor and integrity in the Corps of Cadets. He also received the Chicago Tribune Gold Medal for military merit and the Order of Merits Medal for loyal service as a cadet officer. He is the son of Mr and Mrs Robert Alexander Rt 3 Carbondale.
