On a quiet Sunday afternoon in Carbondale a stray 9mm round and a semiautomatic rifle were fired from a home on south Giant City Road striking near residents. Ted Lomax, a Carbondale Fire Department captain, dodged bullets while tending his garden as Clifford Phillips and his family heard shots and saw a bullet land in their pool. Sgt David Nichols located 45-year-old Robert Runion at his residence and found live rounds and spent shells. Runion appeared unaware of the danger his target shooting posed. The incident prompted a sheriff's investigation.
Former Sen Max Cleland spoke at a Southern Illinois University Carbondale fundraiser for Barack Obama warning that Republicans will use the same vicious tactics seen against Cleland in Georgia and John McCain in 2000. He urged vigilance against “scorched earth” campaigning as Obama faces Jack Ryan for the Senate seat.
Marion Illinois mayor Bob Butler lambasted the state legislature for stalled medical malpractice reform. He cited Carbondale's tie vote on home rule to move cases to judge-friendly counties and cap non economic damages, questioning local action's effect on a broader state crisis.
The Southern Illinois Baseball Group remains optimistic about buying Battle Creek Yankees owner David Hirsch and moving the Class A affiliate to Southern Illinois. Spokesman Michael Thiessen says Hirsch’s option decision isn’t fatal and other potential sellers in other leagues are being explored, with a Midwest League return preferred but not ruled out.
