Herrin police boast a low crime rate with five full time officers and a budget of 37,550 last year rising to 56,575 this year. Chief Rey Cole credits close patrols and knowledge of local hoodlums for keeping thefts and break ins low while population shifts may threaten future crime levels.
In Algiers troops and riot police crushed shows of support for deposed President Ben Bella. Demonstrations spread to Philippeville Constantine and Oran with reports of clashes and possible fatalities in Bone. Authorities say no injuries in Algiers but unrest continues across cities.
A 72-hour nationwide strike in support of the rebel government collapsed with weak participation.
