Stop Gap Draft Extension Approved by Senate

The Senate approved a stop gap fifteen day extension of the present draft law delaying its expiration to July ninth. The measure, taken on a voice vote, now goes to the House for action at the request of Senate Democratic Leader Scott Lucas of Illinois who warned Congress may not finish a longer extension before the deadline.

The widow and son of former West Frankfort city judge Myron Clem filed a 375000 dram shop suit in Franklin circuit court naming 25 tavern and property owners. They allege Clem’s death resulted from liquor sold or given to him, detailing defendants and venues including Arcade tavern in Herrin and Illinois tavern operations.

Riverview Florida June 22 AP lightning struck the same spot a year after a bottle was knocked from Charles Sappal’s hand at his Little Manatee River fishing camp. The second bolt killed the 67 year old man yesterday leaving no survivors.

Rent Control Bill Extends Federal Controls Six More Months

Washington reports a rent control extension clearing Congress with a 176 to 145 House vote and 40 to 24 Senate vote. The bill, negotiated in a House Senate conference, adds six months and allows municipalities to extend six more months. It preserves Chicago permanent accommodations limits and lets counties decontrol unincorporated areas. Support included 30 Democrats and 10 Republicans. opposition included 18 Republicans and six Southern Democrats.

Springfield June 22 AP Gov Adlai Stevenson’s rent control measure cleared the House 91 to 45 and goes to the Senate as cities could retain ceilings until 1951 and use federal controls for six more months. The relief and child aid request failed 88 to 51 amid GOP opposition. The assembly also debated Chicago revenue bills and tax measures to ease city finances.

Putnamville Indiana Judge Norvat K Harris of Sullivan circuit court began new duties in the cattle barn at the state farm for a six day contempt sentence. Beardstown Bridge Blocked After Swing Span Collision

The Beardstown toll bridge over the Illinois River was taken out of service when a power craft pushing six barges struck the center swing span. The span was knocked out of line and road traffic was expected to be halted for several days. U S route 67 and state route 25 cross the bridge. Little wind and no immediate explanation were reported.

Seven Pound Bass Dominates Crab Orchard Lake Catch

The Schroeders and kin hauled 36 pounds of bass at Crab Orchard lake on Wednesday. Prof J Henry Schroeder and Leroy Lyons started the day with six bass totaling 14 pounds. Later Schroeder and his wife added a seven pounder and a five and a half pounder, finishing with 22 pounds in one hour.

Morristown Turmoil as Gunfire Hits Enka Plant Strike

Three men were wounded when gunfire erupted at the American Enka rayon plant in Morristown Tennessee during a shift change. A second volley shattered windows near the gate as 60 to 75 armed workers gathered. State police rushed 70 officers with gas to the scene. One man, William McGinnis, was critically injured. two others suffered minor wounds. The 12 week strike by CIO Textile Workers began March 28 over wage demands, with average pay cited at $1.35 and company claims of higher offers.

Santa Monica obituary for Jane Cowl a renowned stage star and former Juliet who died of abdominal cancer after a hospital stay.
