Illinois salvage talks end in labor business tax pact
After two days of tense bargaining at the Executive Mansion Illinois labor and business negotiators sealed a package cutting unemployment benefits by 256.5 million and raising employer taxes by 165.8 million to avert deeper state debt. The deal, amid warnings of federal loan limits and rising penalties, foresees a 12 month benefits freeze with a later thaw and a heavy political price for both sides.
