Harrisburg mayor joins strikers in wage talks resume
Harrisburg Illinois AP negotiations to settle a wage dispute between the City of Harrisburg and Operating Engineers Local 318B resume Monday. Picketing by 32 striking city workers including Mayor John Cummins ended at noon Friday with the announcement. Cummins, 57, an employee of the water department, offered to resign to speed negotiations but Monday’s sessions will delay that decision. City workers seek a 75 cent per hour raise while the city offered 50 cents. Cummins earns about $14,000 yearly from the water department and noted he has worked 21 years there, earning more than as mayor. He said city negotiations are handled by attorney Charles Phelps, not the council and mayor.
