School Chiefs Told Safety Code Duties

County superintendents must enforce the new state school building safety code and are liable for accidents caused by failures. They must oversee safety surveys by engineers, require immediate corrections, and conduct annual inspections before April 1 with reports to the state superintendent.

District Seeks Safely Study

The district requests a Carbondale architectural firm to estimate the cost of a safety survey for its 1 schools to comply with the new state school building safety code. Secretary William Armstrong said a survey date is pending the estimate. He expects many corrections, including automatic fire detection, fire screens or doors, and automatic alarms. The high school already conforms in all ways. New fire escapes may be needed at one school. Armstrong calls the code good though costly.
