The
Amplified civic effort eyed for East St Louis area
In cooperation with a proposed enlarged citizens committee Alfred Geiger, committee chairman, said the group will expand to include all community interests and views. A $15,000 fund will underwrite the first year of the development program as Poston plans to place a full-time staffer in East St Louis once funds are available. The program, called a giant undertaking by Morris, is described as possibly the largest of its kind. The University already runs development programs in Mounds, Carlyle, Coulterville, Flora, Cobden, Quoin, Eldorado, with Cairo to begin in the fall. The community development department employs nine, including a small business specialist, aiming to help towns identify and act on economic and social projects through resident-led surveys.
