The Postal Service moves toward an electronic mail network with overnight delivery at current rate levels. A $2.2 million RCA contract funds a study of computerized messaging options to gauge national market feasibility and public acceptance.
The Postal Service and RCA discuss computerized mail systems including electronic mail kiosks in shopping centers where block letter messages are read by OCR, converted to digital form, then transmitted to a Postal Service unit for next day printouts or delivery. A business could link its computer to the postal system to send messages electronically. The system would reduce mail handling while the Postal Service employs about 700,000 workers.
