Farm Adviser Vic Smith notes the county is a month behind, many farmers switching to soybeans. Jackson County shows 90 percent corn and 85 percent soybeans planted, rain cited as delaying factor. A University of Illinois study shows yields dropping as corn is planted later in May to July. Extension agronomist W O Scott suggests switching to grain sorghum or soybeans in the region, with soybeans feasible until early July.
