Bills on animal delivery to labs hear in State House
The House Licensing and Miscellaneous committee set a 2 p.m. hearing in Springfield on Senate Bill 719 to require delivery of animals to licensed laboratories for experiments. The bill, passed by the Senate, would remove the local option and mandate delivery for unclaimed animals after 15 days. Opponents include humane societies fearing operation loss and a professor from Southern Illinois University. Also under discussion is House Bill 1689 allowing certain live-animal experiments in public schools, with critics arguing current law bans killing animals in class. The hearing will feature testimony from medical schools and humane groups.

Senate Group Defeats Tax Lindsay Schaub Plan in Revenue Panel
Springfield June 20 The Senate Revenue Committee defeated a bill for a sliding scale rebate on state sales tax collections by merchants, 9 to 8, after Chicago Democrats walked out. Chief sponsor Sen. Robert W. McCarthy said he would reintroduce the measure to seek a full Senate roll call. The plan would grant 3 percent rebate on the first 45,000 in monthly sales tax, with tiered rebates thereafter, plus an estimated $3 million biennial revenue gain. Joe Meek of the Illinois Retail Merchants Association criticized the proposal as unfair and unique to Illinois. Public hearing scheduled for 3:30 pm Wednesday with Chicago Mayor Richard J. Daley opposing a separate city tax increase.
