About 50 students from Southern Illinois join a three day baton twirling and cheerleading clinic in Wilson Hall Carbondale. The event is sponsored by Mary Evelyn Thurman and Mr. Prospect. Students will compete Wednesday with prizes for winners.
The Coffee House on 11th and Walnut in Murphysboro opens as a nonprofit teen space sponsored by the Christian Lay Council. Adults supervise with Mr and Mrs Robert Boudet and Bob Hall overseeing operations. Opening night drew about 70 attendees as local donations funded the converted shoe store space. Hours are 7 to 11 p.m. on select evenings with potential schedule changes based on demand.
Sondra Walker and Kathy Wheeler of Herrin High School created Project 73 a 22 minute motion picture slide and tape presentation to show behind the scenes duties of teachers. The duo used two slide projectors a movie projector a reel to reel tape recorder and 10 000 extension cards. It follows a day in the life of basketball coach Bruce Jilek and features taped interviews with teachers slides of unit district staff and vacation season activities. Presentations target educators and the public with future showings planned for September and additional screenings to follow.
Carbondale Teen Center sponsors an all day bus trip to St. Louis Mo on Saturday. Bus departs 9 a.m. from 206 W Elm St park district lots and returns 1 a.m. Sunday. Students may shop visit Forest Park meet Busch Stadium 7 p.m. Cardinals Cubs game. Cost 2 dollars per student waiver required max 40 riders. Durfee Navy recruit graduates Great Lakes.
This week's events target Carbondale teens with activities at Marion and West Frankfort centers. Highlights include YMCA swims and Park District yoga and gymnastics, SIU arts and crafts, Attucks School classes, and a Saturday bus trip to St. Louis plus youth council and teen center drop ins.
