Man jailed for obscene shirt during court appearance

John Paul Hutson, 20, of Benton, spent seven days in Franklin County Jail after Chief Judge Loren P. Lewis sentenced him for direct criminal contempt of court for wearing an obscene T shirt to a misdemeanor case of unlawful consumption of alcohol by a minor. He maintained the shirt was not obscene and said he faced possible longer punishment if he spoke again.

Rain key to limit mosquito numbers

Last week's rain likely won't curb culex mosquitoes unless wet weather lasts through summer. Residents debate possible I 66 route through Southern Illinois

More than 300 people filled Shawnee Community College Atrium Room Tuesday night to weigh options for a new Interstate 66 corridor. Proposals include routing through Pulaski Massac Alexander and Union counties to connect Paducah with Cape Girardeau, with alternative paths through Kentucky and Missouri bypassing Illinois. Beth Ponce of the Illinois DOT said plans are still in preliminary stages.
