Marion school keeps tax rate despite added funds

Marion Community Unit School District 2 will face higher taxes this year after a $5.5 million rise in district real estate value and a $227,510 corporate replacement tax. Superintendent Storme and financial officer Armstrong spoke for questions, noting the tax rate will stay roughly the same while assessed valuation climbs, with bond tax likely to drop. The district loses state aid due to fewer students and a formula favoring larger districts, while enrollment fell by 37.25 students, reducing aid by about $52,000. local officials weigh the need for extra revenue against relief urged by Gov. Thompson.

Illinois House trims university faculty pay rise to 8 percent

Springfield University faculty push for higher salaries faced a setback as a House appropriations committee cut half a percentage point from Senate pay-raise plans. The 8 percent salary increase, aligned with Gov. Thompson’s funding, falls short of the Senate’s 8.5 percent raise and comes amid moves to fund an ethacoal plant and repairs to Davies Gym at SIU Carbondale. SIU Chancellor Kenneth Shaw urged caution on using the new funds, while faculty leaders warned the cut would erode long-term competitiveness and trigger departures.
