Sulfur bills dominate Illinois coal legislation pace
Illinois lawmakers weigh sulfur emission limits and a sweeping land reclamation bill. The sulfur measures, pushed by lawmakers and backed by industry voices, seek to align state rules with or exceed federal standards while the land reclamation bill crafts Illinois compliance with the 1977 federal strip mining law. Debates focus on mining permits, county review rights, and potential tax impacts on coal sales, with optimism tempered by market conditions and industry resistance.
