New York reports a stalemate in bargaining as the union says it will shift to individual negotiations with steel companies this week. The brief note mentions figures like McDonald and John in the scene.
New York June 18 AP United Steelworkers returned to separate talks with Bethlehem Republic U S Steel after a stalemate in joint negotiations with the Big Three. President McDonald said the joint talks have gotten nowhere though Big Three talks are not dissolved. He will begin negotiations with 11 other firms including Jones & Laughlin Inland Great Lakes Wheeling Alleghany Ludlum Pittsburgh Armco alongside the Big Three.
Philip K Chaplain of North Andover became father of a daughter on Father's Day. He rode with his wife to Massachusetts Memorial Hospital with a police escort as time ran short. A patrolman drove and Chaplain served as attending physician. Mother and daughter were reported doing well. It also marked his fifth wedding anniversary.
A $25 filing in East St. Louis Federal Court charges Williamson County Agricultural Association with negligence after Elton E. Sterner, a traveling refrigeration operator, was electrocuted on August 7 at the association’s fairgrounds east of Marion. The Florida widow, Maxine Edwards Sterner of Bradenton Beach, administrator of Sterner’s estate, alleges the overloading of current and wiring on the fairgrounds caused the incident when he touched his truck after plugging in a deep freeze.

Washington AP June 18 AFL CIO Building Trades Department calls off two month boycott opposing mergers of AFL and CIO unions. Richard Gray says George Meany proposes a committee to set a general policy on work jurisdiction, ending the dispute and outlining which unions perform construction tasks at plants.
A Saturday crash near Thompsonville left six people injured, with 14 year old Shirley Miner driving the car carrying Charles Palmer who was thrown from the vehicle and required lifting to free him. Palmer, Palmer’s passenger Nancy Sue Brown and others were treated at area hospitals. Miner faced tickets for underage driving and careless operation. The incident occurred around 5 10 p m on Route 149, two and a half miles west of Thompsonville in Union Hospital West Frankfort's vicinity.

The bill would authorize government loans up to 75 percent of costs for lands buildings and machinery to redevelop rural and industrial areas out of step with national prosperity.
Edward Wodtke, 32, of Rt. 1 Campbell Hill, paid 60.40 dollars after being charged with driving under the influence. He was arrested by Carbondale Officer Jim Stearns and State Trooper Don Ragsdale at 1 30 a m on Rt. 13 near the east city limits and held in jail overnight.

Norman Patrick Kelley, 20, among three prisoners who escaped Hillsboro jail, says he committed 20 robberies, 5 burglaries and 6 car thefts since April. Indicted with partner Martin Paulson for a Chicago grocery robbery, Paulson captured in Springfield and jailed. Kelley says spree began after Pontiac penitentiary release. most robberies in Chicago, with others in Hillsboro Danville Fayetteville East St. Louis. A May 15 holdup left a bus driver shot in the shoulder. Kelley was jailed May 24 for motel robberies, escaped with two others in a hostage incident and a high speed chase. He was recaptured in Chicago after a flight from Indianapolis.
A 12 year old boy confessed to police that he strangled 2 year old Kathryn Ruoff daughter of State Rep. Richard Ruoff after meeting her near her home on Saturday and following her into an abandoned garage. The body was found under floorboards of an old unused garage near her home. Ray John Barker was taken into custody as the excursion bus returned to town. The boy reportedly told officers in a signed confession that he attacked the child and then led authorities to the crime scene.
Premier Gamal Abdel Nasser hoisted Egypt's flag over Navy House in Port Said signaling the end of British occupation after 73 years as nine Russian MIGs flew overhead and a 21 gun salute echoed from an Egyptian frigate. Soviet Foreign Minister Dmitri Shepilov visited Port Said ahead of a planned announcement in Bernesht.

Johnston City Boy Scout troop 69 spent Saturday cleaning a public spillway area at Crab Orchard Lake. Pulaski County schools superintendent M C Hunt promised to follow the Supreme Court ruling on integration as a seven member board was elected for the new consolidated district. Unofficial returns show the top seven on the ballot: Carl Reeves Warren W Helwig Jr Carl Stringer O C Chaney Walter Lipe Joseph Wade Milo Thurston. Defeated were Robert Lilly Oliver McClellan and Bill Insco. The district, Community Consolidated District 10, covers Mt Pleasant area east of Pulaski and Pulaski Village School.
President Eisenhower named Harling J. Ankeny 55, safety director at Bituminous Coal Operators Assn, to be chief of the Bureau of Mines. He would replace retired John J. Forbes. Ankeny previously led the coal mine inspection branch 1947 to 1952 and was the bureau's senior mining engineer 1942 to 1947.
Nicosia June 18 AP Nineteen British soldiers pursuing Greek Cypriot rebel chiefs in the Troodos Mountains were killed and eighteen injured when a forest fire swept through the area. Helicopter evacuations saved many as wind shifts fed the blaze. The operation aimed at Grivas and other rebel leaders seeking union with Greece, with about 2,000 troops involved. Fire cause undetermined, with suspicions on rebels and occasional troop mishaps. In separate attack, U S Vice Consul William Botler 26, was killed by bombs in Nicosia. five Americans nearby injured.
Sen George of Georgia warns Southern Democrats against forming a third party over national convention disputes. He tells Gov Timmerman unity within the party is essential and voices the risk of withdrawing or threatening to do so. George plans to be Eisenhower's Atlantic Treaty role and will not attend the Democratic convention.
