Levee cap for Kaskaskia Island authorized since 1938
The U S Corps says a levee cap for Kaskaskia Island was authorized in 1938 but no funds were appropriated. A breach occurred on April 27 as water crested at 41.76 feet, eroding areas and washing sand onto land. Plans to rebuild must be approved in Vicksburg with no cost estimate yet.

Dates Set to Assess Property in Murphysboro
Property assessment in Murphysboro will start June 25 on the northeast side of town. Sparta High School Names Antonio Jim Romano Principal
Antonio Jim Romano of Sparta will become principal of Sparta High School. He has served as assistant high school principal this year and was superintendent for Trico Unit Dist 176 for six years. He replaces Bernie Weithorn Sr who resigned to head Mississippi Valley Unit 166 at Gorham. Romano is a native of Hurst Bush and a 1950 Southern Illinois University graduate with a 1957 master’s degree.
