Goldwater Signals No Campaign Attack on Scranton
Washington June 17 AP Aides say Senator Barry Goldwater plans no direct assault on Gov. William Scranton in the Republican race for the presidential nomination. He vetoed a suggested, accusatory campaign plan while leaving Scranton as a potential vice presidential running mate. With delegates near the nomination threshold Goldwater plans little campaigning before the convention and urged Republicans to unite against the opposition without grudges.

Byrd urges end to government subsidies for atomic plants
Sen Robert Byrd of West Virginia told the National Coal Association convention that nuclear fuel now threatens coal as an energy source and subsidies for atomic plants should end. He cited cost drops in nuclear plants and urged protections for coal against imports of residual fuel oil and hydroelectric power from Canada. He claimed unemployment could drop if foreign oil shipments are cut back and coal sales rise, boosting rail freight. Johnson sent a message noting coal areas face unemployment and promising export growth.
