Governor George H. Ryan faced reduced state revenues and ordered cuts to education for the coming year. Lawmakers restored part of the cuts during a special session, preserving $6.1 billion for K-12 and $2.5 billion for colleges. He has held jobs from dairy farming to oil field work and city projects, a career his daughter Betsy Varis and son William Payne Jr. say makes him a model of work ethic.
A Houston jury found Arthur Andersen guilty of obstruction of justice. Prosecutors say the verdict advances the Enron investigation and could threaten Andersen’s remaining clients while an Andersen lawyer vows continued legal fight to survive. Jurors noted a memos manipulation but described shredding as largely circumstantial.
