Carbondale city council is asked to fund a study for a municipal solar utility. Shawnee Solar Project seeks 5,000 dollars, about 10 percent of a 48,000 dollar project, with the Illinois Institute of Natural Resources providing the rest. INR plans to award the contract to the city for Shawnee Solar to implement.
Carbondale may become the first Illinois city to formally study a municipal solar utility under a two phase plan. The study, led by MSU official Chris Robertson, would review national municipal solar programs and then craft a Carbondale specific model with financing and organizational options. The project aims to boost energy self sufficiency, keep money local, and potentially fund home retrofits and future generation.
A local rescue duo led by Charles Mullen of Paducah Kentucky and Kari Little are set to perform at the Metropolis Celebration. Their act includes foiling a bank holdup and rescuing people pinned by debris in a Superman envelopes special cadets event. The celebration runs through June 28 with a 1 p.m. air show and additional events hosted by the chamber of commerce.
SIU Carbondale curator David Koch says Morris Library will likely pay more for Henry Miller books and letters as demand grows after his death at 88 in California. The collection includes letters with Anais Nin and Elmer Gertz, who defended Miller in a landmark obscenity case.
Alto Pass residents decide in a Tuesday referendum whether to form a water district and buy treated water from Jonesboro Water Commission. If approved, the system would cost about 500000 to connect, with water users possibly facing modest rate changes rather than steep upgrades to the current reservoir-based supply. Polls run 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. at Alto Pass grade school.
Southern Illinois residents Robert Zeke Davidson and his wife Myra Jean Davidson of Anna play bit parts in Urban Cowboy starring John Travolta. They are longtime friends of casting director Shaun Rhodes, who also featured the Davidsons in other films and in her paperback Hollywood Gilleys and the Urban Cowboys. They will attend a June 23 mall event for a Travolta look alike contest with prizes from local stores.
