Missouri steel-shot study reframes waterfowl crippling rates
A Fish and Wildlife Service Missouri Conservation Commission test involving about 1,300 volunteer hunters, 11,000 shots, and 2,000 ducks found no significant difference in crippling loss between lead and steel shot. The study cites regulations and enforcement debates across Illinois and Missouri, with no clear advantage for steel, easing public concern over nonlead requirements.

Illinois sets two hearings on steel shot zones in Marion and Sair
The Illinois Department of Conservation will hold public hearings at 7 p.m. on June 25 at the Holiday Inn in Marion and June 26 at the State Building at the State Fairgrounds in Sair to gather written and oral comments on proposed steel shot zones. Proposed sites include Rice Lake in Union County, Horse Shoe Lake in Alexander County, Stump Lake, Oakwood Bottoms, Crab Orchard National Wildlife Refuge, and Union County Public Hunting Area. Waterfowl lead poisoning has prompted the shift from lead to steel shot for all shotguns, with six zones unchanged from last year.
