SIU Trustees Review Police Union Legality
The Southern Illinois University Board of Trustees considered whether to recognize Local 878 of the police union led by Adrian Mitten. Attorney Rendleman cited a 1939 Illinois ruling that police are a unique labor group not to be union members, while Mitten argued unions can discuss wages and conditions without strikes. The board asked for a legal brief and deferred action until receipt. Local 878 began as watchmen in 1956 and became police in 1957 by legislative act.
