Transit showdown delays to Monday in Chicago rail battle

A court order averted a Saturday shutdown of a major commuter line as federal appeals court set arguments for Monday in the dispute between Gov Thompson and RTA chair Hill. Thompson released 23.5 million in sales tax funds to the RTA to keep transit running through month end while accusing Hill of attempting to blackmail state officials. Milwaukee Road operations were stayed from ending service pending a subsidy, with 426 thousand of the 23.5 million earmarked for the line though it asked for 776 000. The line carries about 25 000 riders daily and its fate risks others facing overcrowding. Hill declined to disclose allocation plans.
