Two Counties Nominate Same Man for State's Attorney

William A. Lewis, incumbent state’s attorney in Union County, was nominated in two Southern Illinois counties in Tuesday’s primary. He received 189 write-in votes in Pulaski County where no ballot listed a candidate. Lewis agreed to the write‑in to allow the party to select its own nominee later after his withdrawal. He plans to withdraw and let the county Democratic Committee pick another candidate. Authorities say Illinois law requires a state’s attorney be elected in each county for four years, but no prohibition against serving in two counties exists. Lewis called the dual nomination a strange situation.
