Herrin Zoning Proposal Faces Public Hearing
Herrin’s latest zoning proposal may stir opposition as the zoning commission prepares a Thursday public hearing. City Codes Inspector Charles G. Sadler aims to submit the final plan by June 26 to lawmakers, with strip zoning largely removed except for five blocks on North Park and five blocks on South Park. Citizens, including the Action Committee led by Mrs. Juanita Garagiola and local residents, plan to attend to protest commercial zoning on South Park, while Lt. Realtor Loren Coleman attends as an individual. The plan’s residential blocks on South Park were shifted to commercial, and past opposition to strip zoning cites risks of a decentralized business district. Mayor Henderson, initially supportive, shifted to oppose strip zoning after downtown improvements. The absence of a zoning ordinance has delayed federal certification, and public display of the proposal has drawn limited public attendance.
