Hybrids Offer Forage in Drought-Driven Pastures
William County Farm Adviser Vic Smith says sorghum sudangrass hybrids fill forage gaps when perennial pastures dry in July to September. Hybrids grow taller with thicker stems and can support three to five cows per acre in summer. They excel as pasture-green chop or haulage, but silage is too moist. Allowing grain stage raises quality, though corn yields more grain and better silage.

Early maturing soybean seed urged for Southern Illinois farmers
D Roy Browning of the Agronomy Research Center at Carbondale advises area farmers planting late in the season to choose earlier maturing soybean varieties such as Lindarin 63 Harosey 63 and Hawkeye 63. These 63 designated types mature at least two weeks earlier and offer better disease resistance, though frost risk remains. Yields are similar to popular late varieties like Clark and Kent, but unripe seed will reduce next year's germination if frost comes early.
