Jordan split over ERA deadline and women’s movement
Retiring Congresswoman Barbara Jordan says it is unlikely the Equal Rights Amendment will be ratified by the March 1979 deadline and notes that efforts to extend the deadline split the movement. She spoke at the Waldorf Astoria after receiving the Utility Club’s Woman of the Year award. The ERA needs three more states by March 22, 1979, to become part of the Constitution amid protests outside by gay rights demonstrators. Inside, 21,000 Southern Baptists welcomed Anita Bryant, who hinted at possible vice-presidential candidacy for the 13 million-member convention.
