EPA asks Chicago to account for air grant funds
The EPA seeks a full accounting of nearly 2.8 million dollars in air pollution control grants to Chicago. Assistant regional director Valdas Adamkus says there is no evidence of mishandling but the city must return funds if costs cannot be documented. Mayor Daley’s office was notified May 24 after auditors flagged questionable charges. Commissioner H. Wallace Poston says all expenditures can be accounted for despite changing federal procedures.

Senate blocks 12000 extra for Walker flight funds
Illinois Senate Republicans rejected a bid to add 12000 to Gov Daniel Walker’s flying budget, moving 60,000 to the governor’s office budget and stripping the Department of Aeronautics of funds. Democrats pressed to restore the allocation, arguing the extra flights help communicate with taxpayers.

Assessors and supervisors could gain higher pay under bill
A House bill cleared by a 37 to 1 Senate vote would raise maximum annual pay for county assessors and supervisors of assessments. In counties under 14 000 population the range would be 7500 to 15000 dollars, current max 10500. For 60 000 to 100 000 counties the range would be 10000 to 21000 dollars, current max 14000. The measure, sponsored by Rep. Skinner and Sen. Schaffer, lets counties raise maximums to attract qualified personnel.
