In 1968 a record 2,300 campuses prepare 673,000 graduates with 150,000 master's and 21,000 doctorates. Commencement speakers abandon traditional cliches, addressing poverty, racial justice, economic planning, and a polarized society. Figures like Johnson, Gardner, Moynihan, Reston warn against extremism, calls for reform done through peaceful means and thoughtful criticism.
