Atlas Missile Test Ends in Explosion No Casualties

The Atlas intercontinental missile exploded shortly after a test launch at the Air Force missile test center near Cape Canaveral. No casualties were reported. Convair and General Electric produced the missile brought from San Diego for the firing.

Illinois Hit By High Winds

Gale force winds tore through southern Illinois early today ripping up trees and sending them crashing into homes and cars. Heavy rain flooded viaducts and highways while no injuries were reported. In Salem and Sandoval, trees damaged roofs and utilities. an airplane was destroyed at the airport and another damaged. Police reported gutters and plate glass broken in Belleville.

Area Escapees Major Damage

Heavy winds hit the Marion area early and winds up to 50 mph were recorded at Williamson County Airport. No major storm damage reported in Marion. winds also affected Herrin Carbondale and Murphysboro. Rainfall was spotty as a break in a toll line between Du Quoin and Pinckneyville disrupted service but crews worked to restore it.

Turncoat Fortuna To Return From Red China

U S consulate says American turncoat Andrew Fortuna of Ionia Michigan will return from Red China this Saturday. Fortuna was among 21 U S soldiers captured in the Korean War who refused repatriation after the 1953 armistice. Seven of the 21 have since returned to the United States and one died while in Red China.

Springfield June 12 AP the House approved bills to place an auditor general over a non code department of audits with six year terms and a five member bipartisan advisory board to trace tax money after appropriation. The measure expands oversight and would allow the governor and Legislature to receive audits while lawmakers audit the auditor general.

Legislators Night Work Ahead in Springfield

A special night session of the House is planned for Thursday to consider all constitutional amendment proposals. Illinois Senate fails to override Stratton veto on public administrator bill

The Illinois Senate voted 28 to override and 20 to sustain Gov. Stratton's veto on the public administrator bill, short by two votes of the required 39. Debate featured Sen David Davis leading the override effort with party lines split 15 Republicans to 13 Democrats for and 18 Republicans to 2 Democrats against. The bill would let nonresident heirs nominate administrators of estates in Illinois, a change Stratton warned would cut public administrator fees, especially the Cook County office which yields $50,000 to $100,000 annually.

Marion Drivers Escape Injury in Early Morning Collision

Jeff Throgmorton and Mrs. Virginia Du Four, both of Marion, escaped injury in a crash at 7 15 a m one mile south of Marion on Rt 37. Deputy Rex Rowland said Throgmorton turning left onto a plant road was struck by Mrs Du Four’s northbound car on the right side.
