Democrats Clash Over Reagan Tax Plan Creating Class Gap
Washington AP Democrats accuse President Reagan's tax cut of favoring the rich while leaving lower earners hurt by inflation and Social Security taxes. Rep. Charles Rangel cites a growing class system as Treasury official John Chapoton defends the plan as necessary for investment and growth. Downey adds that under $15,000 earners would see net tax burdens rise about 10.3 billion by 1984, while those earning over $200,000 would gain far more in relief.

Five major oil companies including Standard Oil Indiana Shell Gulf Mobil and Phillips cut wholesale gasoline prices this week by one to three cents a gallon as competition intensifies. Cuts vary by market with Indiana Standard lowering as little as a half cent to three cents. Company spokesmen confirmed the moves though Phillips details were not official. The price cuts follow reduced driving by Americans and an oversupply from high Saudi production. Refineries have run below 70 percent capacity in most weeks since March.
