Excavating efforts speeded in Cahokia area sites
University students race to salvage two key archeological locations before flooding and development. An American Bottom site near Cahokia Mounds will be flooded by a 500 acre reservoir, while a bluff site near St. Charles Mo will become an industrial park. An $8000 Parks Service grant backs work to expose a prehistoric settlement dated 1000 to 600 AD. The St Charles burial mound site dates to 100 AD and may hold remains and artifacts of high status individuals.

Limited Transfers Yet High Black Lung Toll Among Miners
A Labor Department study by Leo Kramer Inc reports only 650 of over 3,000 eligible coal miners have shifted to cleaner jobs under the 1969 act. Reluctance stems from higher dusty mine wages, black lung benefit plans, and seniority concerns. The act also caps dust, offers lifetime benefits, and aims to aid victims and families.
