Crash remembered as worst rail disaster in a decade
A Reuters styled recap notes the City of New Orleans crash as the nation’s worst rail accident in ten years, with up to nearly 100 injured and 1.5 million dollars in equipment lost. It compares to a 1998 incident near Mounds where a cast iron pipe caused a derailment and multiple deaths and injuries. The piece also recounts earlier Illinois Central crashes including the 1939 Panama Limited and 1956 Chickasaw, and cites Norfolk & Western disasters in 1967 with extensive damage. Police briefs follow.
