Five Million Center Dedication at SIU Campus
SIU dedicated a new University Center costing about five million dollars with Gov. Otto Kerner as principal speaker. Woolner of the Housing and Home Finance Agency said federal programs will be needed as college populations double in ten years, with about four billion dollars required for student housing. He noted SIU borrowing from federal sources will reach about nineteen million dollars for housing structures, including the University Center, and that current applications seek housing for 1,000 students to be built over 1962-63. The ceremony drew about 400 attendees with over 1,000 tours, and speakers stressed cooperation between education and social citizenship as well as the building’s role in student life and university operations.
