Official quits over ethics law protests
North Barrington planning commissioner David Reed, 49, resigned after missing the ethics filing deadline under a new state law that fines late reports. Reed called the law bureaucratic and costly, saying it serves little purpose while referencing the city’s mayor’s late filing and possible polit ical fallout. The law requires officers earning over 35,000 to disclose conflicts and assigns fines and possible removal for noncompliance. Reed's departure may be the first protest resignation under the act, as prosecutors prepare to act on a list of violators from Cook and neighboring counties. Reed sent his resignation to Gov. James Thompson.
