Silent vigil for RFK grows at St Patrick's during state viewing
A spontaneous vigil by the coffin of Senator Robert F. Kennedy at St Patrick's Cathedral became a defining ritual as hundreds gathered. Prominent figures such as Edward Kennedy, John Kenneth Galbraith, Ralph Abernathy, Jack Paar and a young Robert Kennedy Jr. stood by the casket, with friends and aides initiating the custom Thursday night and over 600 people by Saturday morning. The piece notes the vigil's organic growth and the enduring public homage.
