Illinois House approves 30 percent pay raise for lawmakers

The Illinois House backed a 30 percent salary increase for legislators raising pay from 9000 to 12000 a year plus a 1000 office expense stipend. The measure, sponsored by Rep. Paul Elward, heads to the Senate with the new terms for senators starting January 1971 and House members in January 1968. A 139 to 17 vote reflected strong downstate support and debate over attracting professionals.

Springfield House rejects open housing plan

The Illinois House rejected an open occupancy bill strongly backed by civil rights groups. Rep. Carter failed to reach the needed 89 votes and postponed final action while two alternative measures by Rep. Morgan and Rep. Lee stalled, with all three proposals granting limited protections for owner-occupied housing. The Carter plan would place enforcement in a governor-appointed commission.
