Gymnast Joe Tate Helps Marion Gain Recognition

Joe Tate of Marion High School, Southern Illinois, drew attention at the state prep gymnastics meet in Naperville. He finished seventh on the horizontal bar with an 8.05, and finally was correctly identified by the announcer as representing Marion High School, not a Chicago-area parochial school. Tate was the sole Southern Illinois entrant across district, sectional, and state meets all held in Chicago suburbs, highlighting gymnastics' prominence beyond Chicago.
