Gary Player shot 69 to grab the 206 eight under par lead at the Kemper Open in Charlotte. Ray Floyd and Bobby Nichols tied for second at 209 while Jerry Heard Jim Masserio and John Mahaffey were among those within one stroke of the leaders. CBS will televise the final round.
Steve Strickland has been named head basketball coach at Wayne City, replacing Bill Garrett who led the Indians to the sectional finals this year. Strickland came from Bruford with a 16-10 record in his first coaching season.
The Chicago Bears completed signings from the 1975 draft with Maryland quarterback Bob Avellini agreeing to terms. Avellini passed 231 of 394 for 3,232 yards and 15 touchdowns in college, leading Maryland to an 8-3 mark and ACC title. He is a New Hyde Park native, 6'2" 197 pounds, and was a sixth round pick. The Bears roster adds Grady Alderman Cid Edwards Mike Nordquist Nemiah Wilson among four new players on a 53-man squad.
Vinny Giles, the American champ from Richmond Virginia, defeated England's Mark James 8 and 7 in the 36 hole final to win the British Amateur at Hoylake. Giles opened with a birdie streak and surged to a commanding lead, finishing under sunny skies before a large gallery.
Davis moves from the Texas Rangers to the St. Louis Cardinals in a trade involving Ed Brinkman and Tommy Joe Moore after a volatile spring with Texas. Davis, who spoke of truth and loyalty, debuted for the Cardinals in a 64 victory over the Astros, while Ranger owner Brad Corbett previously refused a salary advance.
Logan signs past Murphysboro and Herrin as the first area communities to contribute to the 1975-76 basketball program. C W Adams of Murphysboro High and Billy Green, from Southeast Missouri State, will enroll this fall. Adams has paid the application fee and both players have told coach John Sala they are definite enrollees.
