Carbondale police arrested Terry Joe Petty after a victim, John R. Tucker of Peoria, identified him as the man who held a knife to his throat and stole $90 Sunday night on South Wall Street. Tucker had planned a Monday meeting at Petty’s Sycamore Street address to retrieve the money but Petty failed to appear and was jailed on armed robbery charges.
State Treasurer Alan Dixon says Illinois will face a cash drain of over 370 million dollars starting September and potential deficits up to 450 million by year end. Budget Director John McCarter denies a cash crisis and questions the projection’s assumptions while dodging specific disagreements.
James Goodwin 36 of Anna is bound over for grand jury action on attempted murder and aggravated battery after a preliminary hearing. He allegedly cut Bob Murray 22 at Wilderness Retreat in Union County on May 28 and is jailed on a 5000 dollar bond.
Larry Gene Mullikin twenty year old from Jackson Tennessee pleaded guilty to attempt to rape in a circuit court in Murphysboro. He received two years probation with one year at Vandalia Penal Farm. Mullikin was arrested April 17 after a Carbondale woman reported the alleged rape and described the hitchhiker.
Inquest returns an accidental death verdict for John Woods 26 of Carterville after his pickup overturned and pinned him, with alcohol level 0.129. Coroner James R. Wilson notes Woods died at 5:20 p.m. and had been drinking. Arto Karoglanian 22 of Nicosia Cyprus earns 200 Frank Stamberg Memorial Scholarship at SIU Carbondale as first Cypriot enrolled in a degree program.
